Why Washington?

Encompassing approximately 18,000 square miles and 11 million acres in area, the Columbia Valley appellation sprawls across almost half of Washington state and contains 99% of wine grapes grown in the state. East of the Cascade Mountains, a rain shadow creates the perfect climate for wine grapes (arid desert, with less annual rainfall than Phoenix, AZ). Exceptionally long, sunny days (average of 2.5 more hours of daily sun than California in peak season) and cool nights result in great acidity, ripeness and full flavor. Dry growing conditions and sandy soils offset many pests and diseases, so vines grow on their own rootstocks; vines also enjoy dormancy for health, hardiness and consistent quality.
